Even the safest places to visit and work can be dangerous in certain circumstances. Accidents can happen at you workplace from day to day and it is important to know what to do if one of your customers is injured on your business’ property. 

Clear the Area 

No matter if the accident occurs inside or outside, make sure the injured person has room and no one else can get hurt. If there is a specific object that caused the accident, such as if the guest slipped or tripped, make sure it is immediately cleaned up so as to avoid further injury. 

Seek Medical Attention Immediately 

Although injuries might seem minimal, make sure the victim gets medical attention as necessary. Employees should be trained in basic first aid and have contact with emergency services. Do not move the injured person if possible, especially in the case of severe injuries or bleeding. 

Train All Employees 

Before an injury ever occurs, employees should be trained in what to do in case of a gust accident as well as in preventive actions. All spills and possible issues should be identified and fixed as soon as possible. Use wet floor signs liberally. Each employee should be trained in CPR and other basic first aid as needed. Some employees may need additional training depending on the industry. 

If new dangers are identified, employee training should be updated to reflect such. This not only helps guests, but can also serve to protect employees in case of workplace injuries. 

Call Your Insurance Agency 

Only once the victim has been helped and received the care they need should you contact your insurance agency. This is so you may file a claim on your general liability insurance. General liability insurance can help with expenses such as medical bills in case someone is injured on your property. It can also protect your business in case of a lawsuit. 

If a guest is injured on your property, they may sue for their injuries. General liability insurance can help with the cost of your business’ legal expenses such as settlement costs, defense expenses and court fees. 

It is crucial to check your policy and ensure that guest injuries will be covered under your insurance. Speak with an insurance agent about improving and upgrading your liability insurance policy to fully protect your guests in case of an accident.
